The Brundtland Commission, formally the World Commission on Environment and Development, was convened by the United Nations in 1983 and the Report of the Brundtland Commission, “Our Common Future”, was published by Oxford University Press in 1987.
From this report came the widely cited definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
The Net Balance Management approach to business is fundamentally based on this Brundtland definition. However, we have made modifications in order to encompass our long term objective of effecting a cultural shift in the management of resources, systems, natural and social capital to improve the quality of life.
Effecting a cultural shift typically includes indirect activities such as the provision of leadership, influence and advocacy; policy input; and agenda shaping. It also includes direct activities such as positioning; identification of opportunities and risks; education and training; footprint monitoring; and communication.
Accordingly, we aspire to achieve what we term the Brundtland plus definition of sustainability, as follows:
“sustainable management of resources, systems and natural and social capital in maintaining and aiming to improve the quality of life and social justice of today’s societies, without compromising the capacity for future generations to do the same”.
